Yeah not sure yet if the knock sensor will be going in the left or right side of the block i did come across another small starter so see what happens
cam is a crane 284
As for compression ratio no idea what it is compression was 165 psi the motor is a bit of an oddball
it came out of a car that was written off but it had been rebuilt not long before
i did take the sump off and could see the hone marks new pistons etc but it had 308 on the crank yet was supposed to be a stroker
It was running a crow solid camshaft with hydraulic lifters and standard valve springs wich i took out don't know what they were thinking
It did have different rods wich nobody could identify
at a rough measurement of the stroke from the piston skirt from underneath as i never took the heads off i got something like 312
I recently found some info on a similar setup using valiant rods and chev pistons they claimed it to be a 350 stroker

Just a thought , if its not pinging with that spark map your using ,and the compression seems to be good ( 165psi at cranking speed with a cam like that is preety high ) then maybe your base ign timing is out -have you checked its 10 deg .
When engine gets hot coolant / mat advance vs map vs temp table may be pulling out some advance as it gets hotter than 98 deg. I think i read your mat temp was as high as 115 deg in one post. :comp:

Yeah base timing is fine when idling on a hot day my mat gets up over 120 still have to sort out a vk style air tray but lately it has been fairly cold here

would a 350 stroke handle more timing then a 308 ?

what is the average mat reading i was thinking maybe that it is playing up i am using the original fan wich is pretty much blowing hot air from the radiator straight into the air filter yet coolant is at 80 and mat can be at 100 or more when driving in hot weather
i think i have a couple of them around here somewhere might swap them over anyway.

Ihave noticed that on std vn manifold when you have a resonable size cam , at idle the overlap allows hot exhaust gasses to be drawn into inlet manifold past the mat sensor at idle which gives an exaggerated temp reading .You will notice that as you bring engine speed up more air passing the sensor brings the temp down . :study:

gotta remember coolant might be below 100 degrees but exhaust manifolds are alot hotter! unless you get good air flow through the engine bay then your always going to see high MAT readings with the setup your using.

Will be 330cubes tops.

A mate has an offset ground stroker in his VC, +125thou (3.188"stroke) @ +.030 yields 325cid.
Take one std holden crank (2.125" journal), eccentrically grind the big end journals down to hemi 6 journal size (2"), and whammo, mini-stroker.
His uses stock Hemi rods also.
Sees 7800+ RPM on occasion (shouldn't really see much 6500 with those rods :S).

theres a 360 stroker made from 308 crank as well with chev rods and pistons

My understanding of a 360 is simply a +.040" bore, on a 5.7 crank (3.48" stroke),
can't do it on a std 308 crank.

I did read about some cranks being 348 with 308 still on them and a 333 stroker using a 308 crank offset ground chrysler rods etc a while back not sure i never really looked much further.
at the price i paid it didn't matter it was a new engine and and a 5 speed conversion wich owed me nothing after i wrecked the car out.
But i recently noticed this http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HOLDEN-308-ENGIN ... 45f2adc489 and thought that is what it must be.
But who knows.
