I noticed bitsareshiity, volkwagen, ford territoy and many of the small European cars do it. The large hyundais are shocking too, smoke screen they are.
Thats because most people dont have their cars serviced properly, add engineered redundancy with delibrate carbon build up and soon you have an intake manifold and valves that restrict airflow more than the factory tune can cope with, all that equals over fuelling...

This is not new, i can remember ripping that stuff off a Gemini I once had :D

Im taking about brand new current year cars, older cars I rarely see pour black smoke except for ford transit vans.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Air pumps are just another way of reducing emissions even fitted to Holden Commodore in the 80's. Lets remember the objective of a manufacturer is to reduce emissions by any acceptable method. If we put a downer on what comes out of the engine why do we still need catalytic convertors? Air pumps are very common on US cars to improve the effectiveness of the CAT. They pump air into the centre of the CAT to assist the rear section with HC and CO reduction. Aussie cars just pumped air into the engine pipe because they had no CAT at that stage. It would be nice to live in the perfect world where out engines don't produce emissions but that's impossible at this stage. If you look at the levels of emissions through the ages starting with ADR27A we have come a long way and fuel consumption is well down so they are working in the right direction. Please don't mention Ford Transit vans what a lemon. I think they have a special system to generate black smoke.

Looks like VW have copped to the issue...

Ford transit.... LOL. We had one at work, it went through a couple of sets of injectors and possibly a fuel pump issue as well. Well known for having fucked up fuel systems.

i have, i own one. it was built in 1966.

alot of the diesels i see blowing black smoke have had those DPFs removed hence, why they choof like a steam train. a friend did this on his navara a while back, as the DPF he dented the shit out of and to replace was something like 4-5k. the problem is, with it stuffed, the ecu couldn't do its 'burn' and the thing would not run. he had to borrow a good DPF and get it to do its burn/reset the ECU then put a bypass pipe in place. dumb.

theres nothing i hate worse than hearing a golf r32 take off with a big exhaust on it with DSG and listening to it misfire on the changes as the ECU either retards ignition /cuts fuel to protect the gearbox during WOT shifts. its a bloody awful sound.

i remember some years ago the PRB Clubmans - in the motec m4 tune (which was locked) had parameters written in the tune for the 4AGE 20v so it would meet certain emission requirements, not exactly euro5 but it had to be clean during warm up REAL quick.

i think VW will be in a bit of shit personally, though, they are a large corporate and might be able to buy their way out the shit.
Cheers,
