yeah. our early pre 2006 cars used single wire uart comms between abs, bcm, dash cluster so there was a pim module to translate between vpw and uart comms.

in 2006 a new pim was introduced to do CAN 2 uart comms, but the early can used different can id's to what the later ecu/tcm os calibrations used in the full blown CAN comms vehicles. luckily all the settings are still there and just need to be turned back on to transmit or listen.

Cool.
Can the PIM send AC on/of based on state of one of it's inputs simply being high or low?

I've finally had some spare time to put together a CAN <> J1850 VPW translation module for a VX Commodore running an aftermarket PCM with the factory PIM kept in place.

So far I have working:
-A/C request and status (bidirectional)
-coolant temp, and AC pressure forwarded to the PIM, which then broadcasts them via ALDL as part of the 41 63 cluster frame

I have also got some spare I/O so the module can double as a small CAN expander.

One thing I'm trying to understand is the J1850 VPW security frames functional addresses $92 & $93

I don't really have a standard vehicle to get logs from so would be great if anyone could share some knowledge on the above or even some J1850 VPW logs from a VT-VZ commodore.
