I'm not personally a fan of that scoop but otherwise that's sweet as.
No matter what the question is, the answer is always more horsepower!

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
So as you know we decided to put the turbo motor back into the gemini so we could go and race in march and when it started it had a bit of a knock in it, so we got it out and pulled it apart to see what the issue was.....
Head off, looked mint on the tops of the pistons, you'd barely know its run at all looking at them!
sump off and noticed one of the rod caps has been a bit hot, ah ha! as soon as the cap came off it was obvious it had spun a bearing, so I was a bit intrigued as to what had caused it to do that....
once the piston and rod came out it was pretty obvious why it spun a bearing!
Its hard to see in this picture but the big end is actually not square to the little end as well as the slight bend in it!
So anyways the pain of the broken motor was very muchly offset by the presents that arrived
I was able to lift this head out of the box with one hand and that's most certainly not possible with a cast iron head!
It looks very nice, and they even use proper valve stem seals on them now, same as what you'd find on a buick V6!
As a side note, a mate sent me this pic, to start with its a mint looking example, but it also has nice fat rubber on the back, skinnies on the front and they are even the same rim as mine, gave me a very good idea of what my FX is hopefully going to look like!

Bummer on the rod, crank survive?
Love that head, would've given my left nut for one of them back in the day

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
Time for some decent billet rods me thinks. Is there much difference in port size on the new head? They look like they are fairly well finished

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
crank is cactus, I am not sure it would clean up with a linish, definitely need a re-grind i'd say, and if that's the case I have ones that are standard size so would get one of them .010 ground..... we'll use the crank out of the nitrous 202 and one of its rods to complete this motor....
vlad - bent rod number 2 for the turbo combo .... not sure if I can say yet for sure its too much power for a stock rod or hydraulic lock issue in both cases .... either way the motor will be going into the gemini as is and less boost (due to other reasons) so will hopefully not be an issue for it.
the new head, its very nice
just by eye the ports look slightly larger, its definitely better finished than any stock cast iron I've seen ... still has a few casting dags though, they reckon it flows 30% more than a stock head so should have more potential straight out of the box than the head I have been running prior to it!
I can also see that it could benefit from some finishing off where the valve stem meets the alloy, but again its still much better than a stock head.

Re: FX Holden Race Car Project
Probably find the bearing wasn't seated properly. With no marks on the piston or the gudgeon pin end of the rod it is the likely scenario.
Is the rod a Starfire? If not I'd just get a complete set of Starfire rods, if it is I'd swap to a quality billet. There used to be a company at Morpeth that made excellent rods, can't remember their name now to even know if they are still in business. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: here it is http://www.argorace.com.au/
