Just try and make sure any non shielded sections are twisted the same direction as in the shielded section. It helps to reduce electrical interference by being able to ignore any spikes that are on both signal wires, only thing is it does depend on how GM designed the circuit in the module if it can take advantage of this.

Also when your setting up the location of the sensor, try and get it here, i think this ended up about 2 degrees out from where i planned for it to be, gives you the best location for cranking timing!

how is this location better for cranking timing? Im just curious ive never set these up before.

Where the pickup and trigger wheel are in relation to each other depends entirely on the ignition module being used. If its a factory DIS module the OP is using it must be setup as per the factory config.

What holden202t is referring to is due to the way most factory 4 wire delco modules operate they need a tooth at the approx spark advance you want when cranking. If you get this wrong your cranking advance can be too far advanced or retarded with no software way of fixing it. With a fixed trigger mount and fixed trigger wheel you would have some fab work ahead of you!

Setting it up as per the factory config of the DIS they normally allow for 6-10deg of cranking advance, then once up and running you can adjust the ref angle in software to get the running advance spot on. Your cranking advance wont change.

Don't think I can mount the sensor that low, gilmer belt is in the way.

I thought that as long as the crank was tdc at number 1 when I make the first mark on the wheel I wouldn't have a problem where i located the sensor?

Thats ok, it can be anywhere around the crank. BUT you must get the middle of trigger wheel teeth/slots lining up with the sensor at the correct engine rotational angle as per the factory info for the ign module your using. So you will need to be able to spin the trigger disc around until that is correct.

For most reluctor sensors also want the tip of the sensor about 60 thou or so from the trigger wheel - you may need to experiment with this a little bit depending on the module.

I have found so many trigger wheels for sale on eBay that I could easily make fit so I'm left wondering which way I should go.
I've seen 36 tooth and the 60 tooth in the right diameter I need so I was thinking which would be the better one too use?

oh that's different, can't say I've ever seen the alternator on that side of the motor before
