L28 Conversion - Ignition Q's

Post by neRok »

hi, im contemplating a delco conversion onto my L28. im sussing out my options at the moment in regards to the ignition/timing. what i have at the moment is the L28 carby engine with its points dissy and I have a vn v6 s2 engine, with all the loom and its bits.

the later efi L28 had electronic dissy, ive just spotted one on ebay and it appears to be a reluctor type. so to use this, i would need to obtain a camira ignition module and also block up all the advance in the dissy.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT

the price on that isnt the cheapest, im wondering if it may be better using the vn v6 coil packs, this is a DIS system? to do this i would need to setup a CAS? how does the vn get its signal, i have never payed attention, would it be easy to use its sensor and make up a new 'trigger wheel'?

also better ask, am i on the money with my ideas or have i got my info wrong? im new to all this.

Im doing an L20ET conversion at the moment. Unfortunatly for us the distributor isnt a reluctor. The one your looking at is, and should work fine. You will need to remove the vacume advance and lock any weights in there so the ecu can control spark. Yes you will need a camira module to do that.

The VN commodore DIS system is a pain in the ass. Its 3x and 18x signals come from under the balancer, and its difficult to adapt to another engine, or difficult to create the same pulses any other way. The generally accepted option is to get a delco D1998A module from the usa, as its trigger pattern is a notch at every 60 degrees, and an extra one at 10 degrees. Then you can read the notches with a VK EST Sensor or VT ABS sensor.

See six_shooters project here, for a great how to. https://pcmhacking.net/forums/view ... f=16&t=213

Hes using code59, but its all delco, and pretty much the same setup for the 808. You can also sign up at code59.org and grab his tune and the xdf so that you have a starting point for VE and Spark tables.

Keep an eye on my thread too, as we get in to it. https://pcmhacking.net/forums/view ... f=16&t=998

It doesnt really matter if you want to go chev dis, or reluctor + camira module. Thats your choice.

iv found the camira/pulsar/astra harness is a perfect starting point as the wiring is good and long and will reach wherever you want in the bay and the ecu can just tuck under the seat

iv been unwrapping the harnesses then labelling the wires then fit loom into place and lay out wires where they need to go then shorten them to length and tape up

really makes the whole conversion a joy lol

thanks antus, looked at your thread, how are you going to make the trigger wheel? are l20 balancer the same as 6 cyl equipment? because if so, im a drafter and i know a plate cutter bloke, could get some made nice and easy.

Im not sure yet. Will be figuring that out this week/weekend. The L20 is small, but its still a 6 of the same series. Looks very much like the L26 & L28. (we also have an L28, and after this is all done and finished we'll look at rebuilding the L28 and swapping that in).

Were also considering putting notches in the existing unused air-conditioning pulley on the front.

Depending when your making yours, we could be interested. Were on a tight time frame with ours, looking to have it running and completed for a track day on the 23rd of feb!

i thought all L20 were 4 cyl lol, dw, wikipedia has set me straight :wall:

i actually want to go the cheapest route, so i need to work out/confirm what parts are required i guess.

for the dissy route, is this the ignition module i need: http://www.cyberspaceautoparts.com.au/c ... odule.html
i think it might be, because kalmaker website says the same type module is used on TPI/TBI chevs, and this looks the same: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-Acce ... ccessories
if that is the right part, then i need reluctor dissy = $160 and ignition module = $55, therfore $215 total.

kalmaker site shares your opinion on the vn v6 system, so ill give that a miss.

for the 60degree route, i would need the trigger wheel, which wouldnt be expensive to have cut but it should be balanced i guess. then the vk/vt sensor, what do the sensors go for, i seen used vt abs for $10, is that about right)? then i would need the D1998A module, which go for $50+, presumming i found the right one. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Ignition-Con ... 1e60654b10). then the coil(s), what do these cost? can the vn coil pack be used? this option may be cheaper, if the coils dont blow the budget.

edit: antus, i found this thread from you: https://pcmhacking.net/forums/view ... f=28&t=967 what happened with the stock L20 dizzy? one of these have an inbuilt cas apparently, why arent you using this?

Yeah thats the right module. Although if you have a u-pull-it or pick a part kind of place, they can be found in the JE camira distributor, or those on other cars on the list cyberspace auto parts list.

Yeah ive been hearing the same for years, but I still had to decide for myself on top of that haha. Turns out everyone was right!

Yes that D1998A ignition module is the right one (and the hardest part to get since its so rare locally). The coils that sit on the modules are all the same, so you can use local commodore ones. The sensor, I dunno, Im gonna see what I can find at u-pull-it this weekend.

It turned out not to have a reluctor in it  and my mate wants coil packs out of principal anyway. It sounds like a fun new project now ive done a reluctor with success on the gemini anyway.

Picked up some VT ABS sensors on the weekend, waiting for the chev ignition modules in post, but have not attempted to fabricate the trigger yet. Should have it all half hooked up and in the car later this week. That way my mate can build his exhaust and so fourth while we wait for the injectors and ignition module (if they still havnt arrived yet). We think were going to try to notch the edge of the unused A/C pully and use a Z shaped piece of metal to mount the sensor to same point six_shooter did. Probably scale the layout drawing from this site on a piece of A4 paper, print it out and overlay it on the wheel to see where to notch it. Computers are more my thing than fabrication, but we reckon at this stage this will work.
