Time to build a car trailer

Post by Holden202T »

well as the subject implies, i need to build a car trailer for getting the gemini too and from the strip!

so today the project began with the purchase of all the bits i need other than the metal really.

went for a bit of a custom size because i need to be able to fit it up my narrow driveway which normal trailers don't fit up!

Aside from the custom width, pretty much just building it with all the features from trailers i've used that i prefer, like electric brakes, roller rocker springs, etc etc .....

so this is what i have so far:

so i got all LED lights, cost a bit more but more bettera :D also got a stub axle and hub to weld onto the side for a spare wheel holder which doubles as a spare hub if ever the need arises (touch wood it doesn't)

As you can see i also wanted guards that i can stand on!!

I always wanted to get some chaser rims for the trailer, and as it happens, driving over the mum and dads place with my brother and we spotted a house selling chaser rims!!!

$60 for 4 x 15 x 7 chaser rims, couldn't believe they were 7 inch wide - and they are mint, no rust, bugger all scratches, perfect for what i need!

so hopefully in the next few weeks i'll get the steel and i can start making it, and i will update you all!

 like almost everything i do, time or money gets in the way, this one has most certainly been the case for the latter but not anymore, i got shafted the other week with the trailer i normally borrow and its getting annoying so im making the money available to work on this over my chrissy/new year hols, hopefully getting all the steel i need today to make it happen so watch this space over the next few days!

I can't really tell from the photos, but looks like 45mm square axles and is that a SL bearing taper on the stub axle?
With 15" rims, would you be better off with drop axles to keep the CoG (and loading ramp angles) down?

Nice looking guards there  What materials are planned for the chassis and floor? And are you building it all yourself?

now thats a good question, i can't remember if its 40 or 45mm square, i think 40, cause thats all i needed for 2 tonne ?!?! i'll try and remember to measure it.

SL bearing taper ? i'm not sure what that means.

i'm actually undecided on the rims i'll use, i'm thinking of getting some old 14 inch commodore rims as their width is more suitable for commercial type tyres, see what happens there, but yeah i want to keep it as low as i can, but i also want it to be a bit higher than the one i have borrowed so i can put the guards on lower so i can open the door when the car is on the trailer (only need them about 2 inchs lower so should be right there), while its kewl to do dukes of hazzard style in and out the window its not very practical!

anyways so today got most all the steel i think i'll need and got stuck into getting some of it done before i ran out of mig wire after 5pm :( just meant it was beer o'clock sooner hehehe

Image

So the width between the main rails is 1820mm and the end rails are 2300mm which should be about the same width as the axles/tyres, so i should be able to fit a VZ commodore on it if needs be and also gives me enough room to just get it down my narrow driveway ..... so then i got 2400 x 1200 sheets of checker plate sliced in half which gives me 600mm for the car to drive on and then the centre will be un-sheeted and the bed is 4100mm long.

hopefully get some more mig wire tomorrow and i would like to get the side supports on it and also make a start on mounting the springs and axles if i can.

bit more progress today, it actually looks like a car trailer now!

play was suspended early due to going out for dinner hehehe ... not that im complaining, been sweating my ring out the last few days ... who would have thought that building a car trailer could actually make you loose weight hehehe

oh and for the record the 15 x 7 chasers are not going on it i don't think just using them to get the axle centred
