Who has tuned a V6 with boost?

Post by VSteve »

I have a raptor supercharged VT and was hoping someone on here who has tuned a L36 with boost can save me some time and effort. I am using CXWK as a base which is a XU6 HSV tune. I already have the fueling side sorted and am now attempting the ignition timing which I think will be alot harder as I don't have a guage to tell me things are where they should be. So to my question.. Is there any room for advancing the timing or is it already as high as it will go? It there anyone out there kind enough to provide their data on a boosted L36 they have tuned? The car has a small intercooler and is only run on BP ultimate.

My VY L67 has plenty of headroom for timing. I run heads, mild cam and a freshened up bottom end.....L67 bottom end that is so the lower comp may be more forgiving under boost.

Knock detect on the ecotec/ l67s is quite clear and accurate. Some people play with knock sensor sensitivity but my balls and bank account aren't that big. I haven't seen the need to do so just yet as I haven't tuned anything crazy.

Watch your knock retard like a hawk is all I would suggest. I always watch the knock detect flag and it hasn't let me down..........yet

I tried bumping up the timing and the difference in power is definitely noticeable. My first attempt at timing resulted in 1-2 degrees of knock retard being logged for a second or two in some places. So I took 3 degrees of timing out of the majority of the curve but on the next log I did there is still a bit of knock retardation but there is no value as shown in the attached pic at 29 secs and 37 secs. Would it be safe to leave it like this or should I pull more timing?

I logged a completely stock VX V6 today and it has up to 5 deg Knock retard in the upper RPM range. Considering its a 100% stock car would this be false knock or is the standard timing that aggressive on a VX? Any help greatly appreciated!

common result of a dirty MAF. once the maf gets dirty, it reads less air than whats really passing through it, which makes it incorrectly run less fuel and more timing. perfect for inducing knock.
get some electrical contact cleaner / MAF cleaner / Carb cleaner, clean it and do another log, it might be that simple to get rid of the knock retard.

its not uncommon for them to produce false retard due to noisy overhead gear at revs too, when it gets really bad its extremely noticeable when driving.
