Holden VS Auto to Manual Instructions Needed

Post by danderson »

Hello, I have found alot of notes about this topic but not one that that provides a complete solution. I have purchased a VS 185kw HSV motor but the loom and manaual ECU did not come with it and yes very pissed about that...

I have picked up today a auto loom and ecu as the only manual loom and ecu that I have been able to find is a crazy price and he can go and jump! I have been told the loom and ecu came out of a police car, it has the following on the ecu lid:

Service No 16195699
5.0 Auto PCM
16240438 BWFZ

My conversion is to run a surpa gearbox or the current m20 4 speed gearbox which is already in the car. I am replacing a 253 in a Holden FE ute.

Sorry for the stupid question but here I go. First I need to be able to start the engine and check everything is ok with the minimal about of wiring if possible. Second I want to run it as a manual. All the help will be most helpfull.

if it was me i'd be getting a vn/vp loom and running it on that with a 1227808 computer and $12P tune .... be much more flexable for tuning.

I am not sure of the difference but would assume I would still run into the same issue of trying to find a manual loom and ecu.

nope, the vn/vp auto and manual looms and ecu's are the same. you can even run a VR/VS 185 memcal in a VN/VP 1227808 ecu if you turn off the anti theft. if you really want you can buy an sxr emulator from here https://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=398 and it will turn a vn/vp ecu into a vr/vs manual ecu, then you can leave the anti theft on and get fast data logging and youve saved a lot of $$$ for exactly the same thing.

Can you not modify the auto to make it a manual? I read that you can use a VS v6 manual ecu with a V8 memcal and still use the auto loom, is that possible?

Yeah you can turn off all the fault codes in the auto memcal so it runs a manual with no check engine light. Need to erase and reburn the EPROM for that - and you will need to do that to get around the anti-theft system unless you run a BCM simulator. Only issue will possibly be your speed, the auto PCM only supports a magnetic reluctor type sensor. Not sure what type either of your gbox's have?

Unless you use a hammer, a V8 memcal from pre VT wont fit a VS V6 manual PCM. The VS V6 uses a physically smaller memcal compared to whats in your PCM. The VS series III V8 started using the smaller style memcal, but that still wont help you as the VS V6 PCM wont work with it. In the memcal ID tool there are pictures of the different memcals .. https://pcmhacking.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=905

Found a manual ecu for $200. What do you think? Will it fit on a auto loom?

Will need to repin your harness and mod the auto plugs to make them fit the manual ECU.

But seriously, there is no need to get a VR/VS V8 manual ECU for what your doing. Jayme's advice is exactly what you should be doing, use a VN/VP auto or manual ECU and harness (or repin your auto one for the '808 VN/VP ECU). Its WAY cheaper and easier than finding a VR/VS manual ECU.
