Getting started :-)

Post by dooda »

Hi all,

straight up i have been researching on here a fair bit but i hope its okay if i ask a couple of questions so i can get started :-)

1- I currently have a vn v8 manual 808 ecu, i want to upgrade it to 8192 baud with vl400's usb adaptor board. As far as i understand this will require me to use a Vr/Vs tune ?

2- If i program in a vr/vs tune does this change require a diferent memcal or eprom ?
(I want to keep it simple so im going to be just logging over the adaptor board and then reprogramming the eprom with a willem programmer. )

3- also what type of eprom would you guys recommend to use ? also uv eraseable or electronic eraseable?

4- and finally as i understand the vr/vs run a knock sensor filter board which is part of the memcal , obviously i wont have this so i presume its just a matter of disabling it in the tune ?

Thanks for any help you can provide ma all :-)

1. yes that is correct and i would recommend using $12P.

2,3. the only difference is you need a larger one, you can get larger ones from a VR V6/8 or VS V8 or alternatively you can get an electronically programable one and fit it to any memcal and your away.

UV works fine but requires a uv eraser and time to erase, electronic is simply a matter of sticking it in the programmer and erase/writing to it.

4. if your car has a knock sensor installed now then you will be able to use that, if not just run it as it is. usually only HSV's and such had the knock sensors in those vintage cars, but either way with or without it you are able to enable or disable it in the tune.

Legend Thanks Holden202 :-)

That answers my questions perfectly ,
one more = when you say larger eprom do you mean physically ? as in more than 28 pin ? or is it the memory size?
and could you recommend me a part number for the right electronic eraseable eprom i would require as im having a hard time finding them .

also another quick one lol , when I pull the cover off the memcal to reveal the eprom - there is two smaller looking eproms - what are these for ?

Thanks :)

something like this chip is what your after.

the two smaller ones are resistor packs, they are for limp home mode, and also determine the engine configuration 4,6,8 cyl etc.

Actually one more question if you dont mind Holden202 or anyone else :D

I know the willem GQ-4x seems to be the most popular burner/reader but is there any other cheaper (but as reliable) burners that will support the 27SF512 EPROM?
I am just on a bit of a tight budget at the moment :cash:

Thanks all

Can find cheaper Willem and Chinese programmers on eBay, they generally are parallel port and not using USB for anything other than power.
