V6 into speedboat

Post by 300kwv6 »

Has anyone fitted a commodore v6 engine to a speed boat before? And what is involved to marinise the engine?

Cheers

probably shouldn't be too much different to any other motor except a bit more wiring .....

and i guess some custom manifolds for the exhaust and custom coolant system .... don't know alot about specific boat stuff though, i guess you'd also need an adaptor plate or something to mount it to the drive shaft.

going from what I remember seeing on my mates 308 speed boat, you have 2 ways you can go.
if you are happy running river water through your engine, then you at least need a japco type water pump. what ive seen them do is to get some exhaust manifolds made that have a water jacket around them, so it warms the dead cold river water up a bit, first, then plumb it through the engine, then out the engine into the acutal exhaust stream out the back of the boat. still these engines dont get much over 50 degc.

other way to go is to leave it as if its in a car and put a heat exchanger in place of the radiator. id still get some sort of water cooled wxhaust manifolds tho for a boat.
id say the most difficult part is getting the drive shaft sorted out. best imo is the vee drive, as the motor can stay relatively far back in the boat and flat.

I have a mate running a closed coolant circuit. The radiator sits under the engine in hull and is submersed in river water for cooling. It's a ski boat and he said it barely cracks the 60 odd degree thermostat at 5000rpm continual.

Thanks guys for the info. It's just an idea at the moment but looks very promising.

and since you have an unlimited supply of cold water for intercooling purposes you may as well turbocharge it too

a friend of mine has a vr buick motor in his boat.. its been in there for around 15 years..
alot of his work was custom, he used the stock cast extractors and just tapped 1/2inch lines with an external water pump to feed them. and used a FNR fluid drive which was custom mounted etc.. and he uses a heat exchanger so he can run coolant etc and run it in any water without having to worry quality of the water/salt water.

but the website below has marinaizing kits for alot of different motors, although expensive but quality products.
