Fuel and temp gauge link

Post by stato2005 »

Can anyone tell me why my temp and fuel gauges have just stopped working?

The engineering check shows no fault codes and the gauges both move 1/2 way at the last mode selection.

It is a WL 2005 v8 statesman. Has a new fuel pump so it is not the sender.

I think it is the link but not sure if it is the PIM, the PCM or the BCM (which one sends info to these 2 gauges?)

I have reset the PCM by removing the 10 amp fuse with car at operating temp over 80c etc as well as disconnecting the battery but no difference to the gauges they both remain on zero. Engine ran smoother after re-learning so not a total waste of time!

I don't have a scan tool so just looking to see if it is a simple fix before having to head off to a Holden dealer to get it re-flashed :(

I know the 2nd gen Commodores (VN-VS) had issues with dry solder joints in the dash cluster which would stop the fuel and temp gauges working then when you hit a bump or slapped the dash (the old commodore handshake) they would start working again.

The test mode may power the gauges through a different circuit?

The temp gauge is controlled via the data from the PCM/PIM but if its like a normal VY/VZ model the fuel is only a resistance reading from the tank sender. If you unplug the wiring at the fuel sender it will bring up a dash error, and in the test mode you used for the gauge check there will be a fuel sender voltage and resistance check. It also shows the coolant temp from the PCM data stream.

Could be what immortality says and a bad joint somewhere in the cluster if the test modes show values.

EDIT: See yoda69s reply below, VZ has the fuel gauge through the PCM so disregard most of this post! But see what the dash reckons in diagnostic/test mode.

Pretty sure vz/wl fuel gauge is controlled via the ecu for the v8's, it definitely is for the alloytec v6.
There were a lot of problems with the v6's when it was first launched, as completely different to setup and calibrate compared to vt-vy.

Ah so it does, both V6 and V8. Added a note above.
