Knock sensor information needed
Does anyone know if the knock sensor from a gen3 is the same as a VN/VP. I am not talking about the thread size but the internals and operation. I fitted my Starion up with Delco and it keeps bringing up a code 43 engine knock sensor. The tests I have done are sensor resistance 4K within spec, supply voltage approx 5 volts within spec however when you connect the sensor it should pull the voltage down to approx 2.5 volts. This it doesn't do. It stays at 4.5 volts. The circuit is complete with not problems there. Is there some difference in the knock sensor that I am not aware of??? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Knock sensor information needed
Looks like I can answer my own dumbarse question. I can't see how to remove the topic so. I measured the circuit/sensor resistance while it was still connected to the ECU hence the resistance under these conditions showed within specs for a VN/VP etc. I just disconnected the ECU and it went to 90K ohms within spec for a gen3. This explains my problem and answers my question NO THEY ARE NOT THE SAME MECHANICALLY.

Re: Knock sensor information needed
The early engines using a single knock sensor had 4k, while the VS ecotec and later with dual sensors used 100k resistance.
AFAIK the later ones operate the same on the early ECU, other than throwing a code 43 if it is not masked.
If the gen 3 sensor is the same type you might be able to just mask the code 43, only downside is you cant detect a fault if the wire falls off or becomes open circuited somehow.

I'm probably inclined to tap out the hole and fit a VN one. What do I do for the time being to mask the fault code? Turn off process code 43? If I did wouldn't the program still retard my timing by 6 degrees?

Re: Knock sensor information needed
Once code 43 is masked the ECU wont check the sensor is connected, but will still work as normal detecting knock without the forced retard for a sensor fault.
Just untick the process code 43 flag to stop the check.

Oh thats pretty cool so even on the $11 code if you mask the code it will still be able to be adjusted & trigger the same even if it's the different resistance & has a knock filter to suit the early type sensor when the later type sensor is used?

Correct, and the VS ecotec sensor has been used on 11P.

Oh cool I thought it was false triggering hence why the other type sensor had to be used, but maybe it just need some ignore time added or similar.

Both sensors false triggered equally as bad on the ecotec.
