Testing WB O2 sensors
Hi Guys,
Been having some issues with WB 02 sensors and getting a proper output signal with the VL400's datalogger.
Now as I understand it, when you first power up WB sensors ( 14.7 spartan and LC-1 ) you get a momentary set voltage (stepped) output for testing/calibration purposes.
The question I have is, can I bench test the WB 02 sensor output without damaging the actual sensor or should it only be done with the sensor fitted in an exhaust system?
I'm intending to re-wire the logger input cable and hoping to be able to test without needing to fit to a vehicle.

i don't believe you will do any damage to it with what you suggest!

its no probs, I even used a propane torch to vary the "AFR" to see it work. Mine works perfect.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

Aren't you supposed to calibrate the controller with the sensor in clean air anyway? My LC1 says to do that on a regular basis

Yeah, LC1 does mention the fresh air calibration but the 14.7 Spartan says it is not required.

Yeah the sensors should handle their own calibration but some kits include their own calibration on top of that.

Ah ok, yeah pretty sure its for the controller rather than the sensor. Obviously that requires the sensor to be run in open air anyway so can't cause too much damage if its recommended practice

Most controllers use the resistor in the sensor plug (its the rectangle thing on the side of the 6 pin connector), this is laser trimmed by Bosch when the sensor is manufactured and calibrated. Innovate do some other trickery in how they measure AFR and instead of using the resistor they need a free air cal.

The Innovate products can be changed via the LM programmer to output a single voltage during warmup. Can also have it output a single (but different) voltage once warm for your initial setup checks. Wont be able to read AFR like this but it speeds up the process to confirm the analog output is accurate as you get two AFR points to check. Can program maybe 13 AFR during warmup and 17 AFR once warm (you set a voltage in LM programmer so you need to calculate the voltage that corresponds to AFR).
