Tuning tools for a VT V6 Ecotech
Tuning tools for a VT V6 Ecotech
Hi.
I am new to this forum and after reading a lot of threads have a few questions.
I am working on my VT V6 series 1 wagon (10/98 build). I have tried a few tuning options including a wolf v500 without success. So after a new exhaust and a CAI kit I would like to try RT tuning the delco.
It seems that OSE 12P will be the new tuning software of choice. I have downloaded everything on this thread but can't find an executable to load under windows - what am I missing?
Also what hardware will I need? Is the Ostrich enough?
Thanks
Tom

The software to use with the xdfs here is tunerpro. Its available from tunerpro.net
OSE 12P is for the delco '808 computer found on VN/VP commodores, JE Camiras, N13 Pulsars, and some others. The VT is a much later system, and we have not developed real time software for it yet. Having said that, you can still see what is available to be tuned with yoda69's VT xdfs and tunerpro, and you can either take logs, calculate the changes from those, modify the bin and write it to a chip and then put it in the car to observe the results, or get the ostrich as you say. There is something funny about our VT chips, but I believe those problems have been sorted that out and moates has developed a suitable adaptor. Even without that adaptor you can work around the problem and still use the system, even though it is a bit more of a pain in the ass. Someone who knows the specifics there can probably give you more information.

Antus,
thanks for your reply. I will check out the xdfs you suggested.
I am a little unclear about the ostrich. (never heard about it before tonight). For RT tuning - do I open up the ecu case and connect a cable(?) to the main board or is it a lot easier. Perhaps if you could point me to a copy of the installation/user manual I could figure it out for myself

The ecu has a panel on it which you open up, and under there you'll find the memcal. It looks blue on top, and contains the chip with the program and the data on it (memcal). It slots in to a spot on the computer PCB. You either grab another memcal, desolder and remove the chip and replace it with a socket, or get one of moates pre-made sockets like they show in their example doc here. Its the 2nd and 3rd to bottom pics.

However you should probably wait for the adaptor that will suit the VT pcm. I think it'll be the G6. The best way to think of it is the ostrich connects where the chip goes and looks like a chip to the engine computer. But you can change whats on it from a pc while the engine is running. (realtime)

Thanks
have read and understood the moates doco.
Adapter sounds like a great idea.

The G6 adapter shouldn't be too far away.
I'm in the process of putting some basic info together on using the Ostrich with a VT, so far have been able to successfully connect to my VT V6 and a mates VT Holden V8 (5.0 Litre) and make changes in realtime, with many thanks to a couple of other members here who provided support.
As Antus has mentioned, it is a bit of a pain in the ass. Bins have to be stacked and then you need to figure out which ones to change, but the G6 adapter should make it the same as any other bin and not require stacking. Having said that I will cover both scenarios with the information I put together.
You can PM or email me through this site if you require any further info or help before I get round to posting it up.

Thanks.
I have a few mechanical mods to finish before I start tuning again. For now I will probably wait for the G6.

Re: Tuning tools for a VT V6 Ecotech
I have my series 1 VT SS l67 running very happily on an ostrich right now.
I made a very simple adapter out of 2 40 pin header sockets (which I trimmed down to 32 pins with a hacksaw) and some prototype (strip style) PCB.
I cut a strip of prototype pcb to fit lengthways between the pins of each connector (so the tips of the pins from one connector are just touching the pins from the other) for a bit of extra strength, and then i soldered all the pins from one connector to the other. The socket on the ostrich is a 34 pin and so therefore you must offset the adapter 2 pins from the end.

Re: Tuning tools for a VT V6 Ecotech
The hardware you have is effectively the same set up I'm using, 32 pin cable from Moates and an adapted memcal with PROM removed and machined pin socket soldered in.
I'm interested in finding out how you are loading the bin into the ostrich?
I've been working with others and the only way we could get it to work successfully was stacking the bins.
What software are you using, TunerPro?
What software settings are you using?
What settings have you got the ostrich set to?
What size bin are you loading , 128k or 512k (4x128k stacked bins)?
Thanks,
yoda69

Re: Tuning tools for a VT V6 Ecotech
Initially I used EmUtility until I found out that there was an extra toolbar in tunerpro that was turned off (bank selection).
I am using the Ostrich set to 32 pin / 4Mbit, and yes I have been just using a stacked 128k * 4 bin.
I am planning on disconnecting A17 & A18 from the bus and putting pull-up resistors onto them so that I can just upload the 1 bin.
...and maybe add some switches too, so as to switch between the 4 bins if I stack them.
I believe you can set EmUtility to upload the bin to wherever you like in the ostrich's memory, so that could possibly be another way to avoid having to use stacked bins.
