Does windows see your interface in device manager? And assign a com port number?

Could be worth following it up. Does it give you the option to update or install drivers?
What version of windows?

try installing drivers from here http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
normally they will be installed automatically from windows update.... there may be something wrong with yours.
