.....aside from removing the top part of the plenum can these be removed without doing that, or does that whole top section need to come out.
not overly fussed as guessing the plenum will be gunked up and its an opportune time to do the PCV and clean all that stuff out.

yep, top section needs to come off.
use paint stripper to clean the carbon and crap out. Just bush on and hose off.

Clean the intake manifold with some degreaser first, especially around the injector boss's before commencing work, Prevents shit getting into the engine and clean(er) stuff is nicer to work with.

Re: Replacing Injectors - VX
i replaced the fuel filter about 2 months ago. all this black crud came out of it - was really quite bad.
i have a starting issue whereby it takes a few cranks to start. normally this is a sign of dribbling injectors, but theres no clouds of black smoke on startup.
so not sure if its injectors of fuel pressure reg (ie: if i turn the key, prime the system, switch off, then do again it starts fine) - which to me sounds more like FPR.
so thinking i will do injectors & FPR at the same time. given the whole lot needs to come off anyway, and, then clean the inlet manifold and throttle body and IAC yada yada yada. and then do hers as well.

Re: Replacing Injectors - VX
ive had a similar issue before and the problem was the drain back valve in the fuel pump. as soon as it stopped priming all pressure was gone, had to build it up once cranking started and thats why it took longer to fire. you can find out easily what it is by putting a pressure gauge on it. wait for it to prime then clamp off the return line and see what happens. if it still drops pressure, clamp off the supply line after it has primed and see.
