Bench top Engine Simulator for the P01/P59 Pcm

They go by many names, P01, P59, VPW, '0411 etc . Circa 1999 to 2006. All VPW OBD2 PCMs.

Just realized why I am not getting expected results ...

My Pcm's are from V6's, P01 is off an L35, P59 is off an LU3.

So I need to decide the path I want to take to change that.

Other then VATS what else is likely to shut it down?

Hi all,

Gampy, the L35 P01 V6 PCM uses a 1x CAM signal, a 3x CRANK signal, six Injector lines, and has only ONE Ignition output.

Not too sure if the LU3 is the same or if it uses a CnP Ignition system.

Just found this:

Electronic Direct Ignition System: a trio of ignition coils is mounted above the former location of the conventional distributor (a unique “stub” shaft is used to drive the oil pump). Each coil is directed by the engine’s controller to fire two cylinders. The ignition system uses a 58X crankshaft-sensing reluctor wheel, similar to those used in GM’s Gen IV V8 engines.

So it is a Wasted Spark system like the Buick 3800 V6.

Mike

P.S. That's not a bad looking O'Scope! Not too expensive either. Better than the $1500 or so for the Tectronix I had.

Also, Have you made a .bin from the LU3 PCM? If so, could you post it here?

The LU3 was made in two variants. One used a P59 (That’s what I have in my truck) and one used a E37.

The P59’s have a single coil output just like the L35. Like you said this uses a 50/50 1x cam and a 3x crank wheel.
The E37 has 3 outputs (wasted spark). This has a 4x cam and 58x crank trigger.

I’ve debated upgrading my truck to the gen4 E37 PCM but there isn’t any open source information for that PCM.

Understanding Ignition Control (IC)

Is this how it works, Pcm drives IC high dwell duration prior to ignition, drives IC low for ignition??

Yeah, that’s how most coil drivers function I believe.

Hi all,

Has anyone else noticed that all of the Arduino OBD2 simulators seem to be CAN based?
Does anyone here have the skills needed to modify something for VPW?
I DID find ONE that was made for a 1996 FORD PCM.

May not be in the budget for some but I use the Haltech Elite tester on Haltech ECU's. It "could" be re-pinned into a pair of GM connectors to simulate an engine much the same as it does for Haltech's. No idea on price as I acquired this second hand.
