0411 swap finishing touches and questions

They go by many names, P01, P10, P12, P59, E38, VPW, '0411 etc.

0411 swap finishing touches and questions

Post by pmcquay »

Im just finishing up an 0411 swap on my 96 sierra 5.7, and I have a few questions regarding final steps:

1. I need to do a crank relearn, is there a non-just-go-buy-another-$500-in-software way to do this? I have an obdx pro vt that _should_? Support tech2win using theor D-PDU api, but I'd rather not use cracked software if I dont have to. Would be super handy if pcm hammer did this, but being a software developer I really dislike bothering other devs for my own pet feature.

2. I need to do some tuning, as with this swap I've gone to 26 lb ls1 injectors, in a holley 300-263 manifold. Ive found injector data for them, and it starts and idles fine, and light throttle is fine, but it bogs hard when stabbing the throttle. Id imagine there are some differences in the transient tables I will need to deal with. For that I will need to be able to datalog, and use a wideband. What is everyones favourite software for this? I do spy in a technical document that the obdx pro vt has adc channels that I could hook up to a wideband, but they dont appear to be broken out on mine. Is there a way to get at these? Is there software that can use them?

You can get a legit day license for tech2win from here: https://www.acdelcotds.com/subscriptions
I am not aware of free software that can do this, though it may exist. There may also be cheap aftermarket scan tools that can do it. Its probably not a complicated process, if you wanted to extend PCM Hammer to do this you could log the data while you do yours and take some notes when each packet goes across in relation to the manual steps you need to do and see if you can figure it out for others.

For datalogging you have a few options depending on interface type. Universal Patcher has one, so does VPW logger in PCMHammer. I have not used either. I am not sure how far Universal patcher's logger has progressed, VPWLogger is still a bit manual without a sufficiently nice UI in my opinion.

I only see the option for 3 days for $84 there, but that might still be the cheapest and most likely to work way to go.

As a side note, I find it really odd that this sort of thing hasnt popped up more, what with newer cars having more and more of this sort of "change a part and then retune the software" type procedure. One would think that an app like Torque would have it just built in for a fee. Do the cheapo elm tools just not have this capability somehow?

Interesting, I see 1 day option. It must be regional. But its not much cheaper than your 3.

I think its such a large amount of options, and usually expensive to get data direct from the manufacturer, that those who do it tend to go full commercial because of the time and financial investment to implement many small features on a large scale. Also the bar has been getting higher with newer pcms being more complicated. There are fewer people willing to do it for free. There probably is a gap there someone could fill, though.

Bleh. Yeah thats pretty much what I figured, manufacturers doing the right to repair avoidance dance.

Im in Canada and the lrice for me appears to be in CAD, so yeah maybe ot is regional. Ill probably go that way. Is there an easy way to record the data? Some sort of debug console for the obdxpro? Something that looks at a specific com port? Id be happy to do that for this, as well as an ABS bleed, and any other procedure that might be helpful.

I wonder if there is documentation on the D-PDU api... That could be very neat to look at.

No knowledge on the extra ADC channels on the vt? The doc I found is here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source= ... igFYvIDnBN

Is it really that much more complicated than knowing the correct device control ($AE) command?

wow. That is literally what I was looking for. How did my googling not turn that up. It appears that its for an earlier PCM, I will have to try and see what year mine is.

Looks like GM may have changed the command some time between 99 and 01, but it shouldn't be too hard to log the updated version.

I will probably buy a 3 day tech2win license soon and use my OBDXPro VT (I cant say enough good things about this tool! It supports this!?!) as the hardware. Is there a debug mode I can use to log the conversation? I am fairly technical, but a hardware wizard I am not.

The DPDU API logging is enabled automatically, you can view the radio API commands from its log directly from:
C:\Users\[YOUR_USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\OBDX Pro\D-PDU\Logs

Just update your accounts username there so it loads correctly
