ALDL logging - set up problems

Post by hatchssv8 »

After lots of reading and preparation I bit the bullet and decided to hook up the laptop to the ECM.

Made my own interface cable as per the diagrams. Downloaded the software that is recommended on here (RT, Winaldl etc)
Downloaded the appropriate ecu files
On RT I have also set up the correct ECU file but nothing

I have been trying to read the comms from the ECU without any luck for two days now. Can anyone give me a tip.

808 ECM- stock and unmolested, and working
enabled ALDL with 10k res - confirmed with CEL flickering

Thanking all in advance, Arch

this is the only 160 baud interface i was ever able to get working with vn/vp and using winaldl.....

having said that, it didn't work with some ecms for some reason.

a much better option would be to move to a 8192 baud interface, they seem to be alot more reliable not to mention faster.

up and running with Winaldl

Now to get 8192 going
Is there a lot to do to the ECM
How quickly can I get that interface I wonder?

some 10 years ago I built the techedge max232 based one and used it with their aldllog dos app for 160baud on a stock VN. For the record It did work, but I dont think it will if winaldl wont work for you.

http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/aldl160/aldl_sw.htm

160 baud is cool to see as a first thing to try but as others have said its worth doing the comms mod and running a bin that supports 8192.

edit: wow that was quick, good to see your up and running since i started typing this :)

To start with you will need to change the bin on the memcal over to a modified VR manual $12 - so also need to replace the EPROM with a larger one. If you have a EPROM programmer its worth doing as you will gain a fair bit running the newer code.

Actually I have just shoe-horned the motor and box into the car. Only has an engine harness with all powers connected to get it running

I will be running in the motor this afternoon on a stock VN V8 memcal (I only have a 808) The other ECM I have is a 424. With the mods to the engine I would ideally like to run with a stock 215 memcal

definately get a few kms on the motor and do some logging with the current setup you have, if your running it in the last thing you want to do is be side lined because of trying custom tunes .... once you get some kms on the dial then worry about changing tunes etc

also get some logs of the blms then you can atleast do some basic tweaks to the tune to suit the engine mods.

you don't need to change ecms for using the VR $12 code, it runs fine on the 808 but you will need the 8192 interface to be able to see any data from it once you do that.

The stock tune I used for run in was ok but the specs of the engine a re 98% as per a HSV 215, I thought it would be better to use that as a base and make any changes as required (less changes?)

Interestingly I worked out why it took me so long to get the ALDL logging (or PC to recognise the data from the ECM).

As I only have and engine harness connected, powers and earths, I had only wired in the following additional items
- Electronic oil pressure guage
- Electronic temp guage
- Generator lamp

Everytime I checked the CEL wire to confirm data comms, I did so without running the software. It was only by chance that I checked for data comms with the software running that I noticed the values all popoulate on the screnn. I was checking data comms with a 1.4w globe..........................and then it hit me........it needs the CEL globe connected!!!!!!

Bingo

isnt a hsv 215 the 355 stroker? you definitely dont wanna be running that on a stock 304 tune. im pretty sure the earliest 215 tune is VR anyway, which will run in your ecm, you just wont get any comms until you either use a VR computer or put an 8192 interface in the 808
