GQ USB Programmer Software failure?

Post by immortality »

Hi,

Had a issue with my software for the programmer this evening, it won't launch. Asus laptop running windows 10, it has always worked and was working not long ago. I've not made any changes. I've tried turning off the anti-virus as well as windows defender but it makes no difference but I do get the feeling something is preventing the software from booting. IF you launch the app as an administrator the window pops up asking permission for the app to make changes, click yes and it starts (the mouse pointer changes to the little circle working display) but then it just stops and nothing happens, no faults, no error messages.

Then I removed the app, downloaded a new copy from the website ( https://mcumall.com/downloads/) GQUSBprog6.38, installed, plugged in the programmer and made sure the re2.01 signed driver was installed but I get the exact same issue. The program starts to launch but then just stops.

Not sure where to go next?

Installed the software on my desktop PC, manually updated the driver for the programmer and it all works so really unsure of what is happening on the laptop.

Stupid question, did you try powering the laptop on and off completely?

My laptop does this sort of thing all of the time, and I've worked out it's due to incomplete windows updates that need a full power cycle to finish and it's so much of an issue, stuff literally stops working with exactly the same symptom, starts the program but never actually ever loads it, says it's running in task manager but physically isn't open anywhere.

Gets me every time! Because the laptop never actually turns off when I close it, just looks like it due to hibernation.

I even get grey screens of death and full black no power crashes, where the laptop appears off but does not respond to anything, not even the power button. So I need to told the power button for 10 sec to force a hard power cycle. It always comes down to these incomplete updates and my laptop never automatically restarts for updates or tells me that it needs to, it just runs until everything breaks without warning.

Usually every few weeks it does this.

Yup, definitely tried that a few times after turning off/on different things.

It doesn't even show in task manager.

Odd, not sure what else it could be. Have you tried a windows roll back to a date prior to it not working?

No I haven't tried that. LOL, I don't know the last time I did that.

I'm quite good at turning on/off my laptop. I know how windows hates been left on for extended times. I always make sure to power cycle after an update has been installed.

Out of curiosity, this morning I loaded the app onto my missus laptop, a newer model with Windows 11 and it does the exact same thing, starts to load but then nothing. I can't see any difference between the desktop and laptop both with Windows 11. Both have the same anti-virus software etc

Maybe it's missing a windows component like .net framework or something like that. MS do tend to drop older version altogether without warning and some programs, especially older ones just stop working.

I literally was going to install the same USB prog on my win 11 laptop soon, I can give it a shot and see if it does the same thing.

Just tried mine. I used the 6.38v win 7 x64 program and the modded 2.01 usb driver for win10 signed. All works perfect on my laptop.

Can you link the download you are using please?

I don't see a specific Win 7 x64 except for the Signed driver and that's installing fine as the device manager is recognising the programmer with the updated driver installed.

I've run through it again, launch as administrator etc but it installs as x86 but no go. Even disabled Avast before installing to ensure that's not the issue.
