E67 Questions

Post by Camino_77 »

Good Morning,

I've got a project that's been on hold for a while and I want to get started on it.

Looking at the different ECM's/PCM"s OEM and Aftermarket, I like the capabilities of the E67 along with the price.
I'm wanting to run my SBC 350 using the First TPI and Harness assembly plus adapters from Mike at EFI Connection.

I've done a lot of reading and searching on here as well as other sites. Although I've spent several years as a Tech and an Instructor, I've not really delt with the Tuning side of the house. I've looked from time to time but never jumped into it.

From what I've gathered through my reading is that a 2009 TBSS would be my best bet. Also, am I correct in thinking that I need to start with a pre-flashed ECM with the correct OS to prevent corruption of the ECM???

I found a totaled 09 TBSS VIN decode on the web. Is there anything keeping me from using this VIN???

I plan on buying a pre-flashed E67 for the 09 TBSS and reading it with Universal Patcher to Create a XDF for TunerPro.

I realize that this is just the First step, but I want to make sure that I'm on the right Path.

well unless you know how to find the parameters in the ecu. you would be better off just purchasing efilive of hptuners.

Going into the code is not really a beginners thing if your looking to get a project up and running relatively quickly.

Thanks for Responding!!!

I was under the impression that using the Universal Patcher to create a XDF for TunerPro, then use TunerPro it would populate alot or most of the Tables. Is this incorrect???

Also, I have already downloaded and installed both efiLive and HPTuners. efiLive seems easier to use, but my understanding is that HPTuner has more Tables mapped out for the E67. Whats your take on this???

Again, thanks for responding!!!

Nope, doesn't work like that unfortunately. You need to know the addresses of the tables and define them by hand. The exception is if your OS has already been partially or fully defined by someone else and they send you their definition file. The address information is not public and extremely hard to impossible to get for the masses.

E67 support with efi or hp is on par (based on the Holden OS I compared once upon a time).

Universal Patcher can't read an e67.

There is a E38 Corvette OS that is popular with swaps. I don't have the OS number on hand but there is info about it out there.

If you want to use tuner pro / universal patcher and the pcm hammer flash tool, consider a gen3 pcm. There is good support here for a good number of the OS's.

Thanks for the Reply!!!

Yes, I had considered the gen3 0411 a few years back but was told by the local shop on Base that I should run of the Holley EFI System. By the time I figured everything out, I was being nickle and dime to Poverty level. LoL

So it looks like I'll be looking at efiLive and hunting down some definition files for the E67. The replacement ECU from GM Serial Number 12678512 covers 2009 - 2012 including the 09 TBSS. Will I be able to still use the 12630465 OS with this new ECU???

Again Thanks for the response!!!

You need to match the ECM hardware, ECM OS, throttle body, and throttle pedal assembly for best results. You can mix n match with some proven combos, but if you keep everything the same, it makes things much simpler.

If you buy EFILive or HPTuners, you do not need to do anything for definitions - that's part of the tuning suite you purchase. You have to purchase their proprietary hardware and licensing to be able to write to your ECM.

I'm extremely familiar with the TBSS platform (have an 08) and differences between the different year and OS differences. It's not the most common platform to use for swaps in most cases as it's a bit of a transitional platform between VPW and CAN eras plus doesn't have transmission options other than 4L60E (can segment swap 4L80E on the T42 side).

Can you elaborate on your setup? What reluctor setup do you have? What transmission, auto (which one?) or manual? DBW or DBC throttle setup? What's pushing you to E67 vs E38? They're very similar internally, my understanding is E67 is basically an E38 + VPW comms for platforms that hadn't fully moved to CAN and needed VPW comms and/or needed the extra I/O to support the LSA supercharger.

If you want to use PCM Hammer and UP (and/or other open source tuning), you'd be better off using the 0411 PCM as you have multiple throttle and transmission options. You would have to use a 24x/1x reluctor setup vs 58x/4x on E38/E67.

Hptuners has a larger following because they did a much better push into the US market by providing a cheaper and imo inferior cable. Which is why theres a bunch of hacked & knock off version. Still havent seen a cloned efilive unit.. The software was often more prone to bricking controllers because they didn't put any checks in place for what was being flashed. I've never been a fan of their scanner software due to the fact it does not easily link up data to the editor like efilive does.

I pretty much use efilive for all my tuning, I only use hpt on ford stuff & it's very rudimentary at that. Efilive has always been more customizable for end users by allowing custom definitions etc with those with knowledge on how to find stuff.

Just my 2c.

I've been reading through different forums where you've posted along with Tazz. From your previous post, I had already gathered that I needed to use matched components which is a good point and makes sense and the components need to be able to "Talk" to each other.

My Question in this regard is what happens when GM updates their electrical components??? Are we able to use the new components as if they were the original including using the same OS or anything else??? Just trying to ensure my thoughts are correct on this matter.

Glade to hear about the definition, wasn't sure. I don't mind paying for the program, I just want to ensure that it will do what I need/want it to do.

As far as my combo or swap goes, I have a 350 that I had built several years ago. I'm going to freshen it up adding a roller cam, new heads, use a FIRST TPI with a DBW Throttle Body. I would like to go Coil-n-Plug and use a conversion kit from EFI Connection along with one of their ECU harnesses. I will mate this to a 4L60E that I'll build with upgrades from Sonnex and a T42 TCM.
EFI Connection has both the 24x/1x and 58x/4x reluctor setups.

This power-train will be dropped into a 78 Camino that I'm starting to work on. I like all on the newer interior gadgets so I'm looking at swapping out the Dash for a newer one. This includes using more modern dash components. I would like whatever ECU I end up using to be able to talk with the BCM and everything else that I decide to use. No, I won't be installing ABS or SRS for starters. However, cruise control is a must along with some sort of VATS and keyless entry and push button/remote start.
The E67 ECU gives me both the 58x/4x and Cruise. From the info I've read online, the TBSS OS gives me the cruise option.
However, I'm not sure why a good BCM couldn't be incorporated for the Cruise Control. I know a lot has changed since I turned wrenches for a living, so I've got some catching up to do on the electrical/computer side.

If there is anything else that you need to know, just ask. I appreciate your experience and advice!!!

Not sure I'm 100% following your question here:
"My Question in this regard is what happens when GM updates their electrical components??? Are we able to use the new components as if they were the original including using the same OS or anything else??? Just trying to ensure my thoughts are correct on this matter."

If by new components, you mean a brand new part, that has the same compatibility with ECM service number and the desired ECM OS, then yes, you can use it. You need to use AC Delco TDS to program any blank Gen IV+ ECM (E38/E67/E92/etc), EFILive/HPTuners cannot program the DBW controller (I believe Tazzi's program could, not sure if that's readily available at the moment). You'd be better off picking what vehicle platform you want to use (Corvette/GMT900/TBSS/etc) and having the proper ECM service number flashed with the compatible ECM OS so everything functions properly. Then you can tune from there.

For a SBC, I'd push you to the 512kb LS1 P01 PCM platform. You can use open source software (PCM Hammer and UP) to easily tune this combo, not have to mess with a 2nd controller (T42) and actually run a SBC ECM OS (well PCM OS, use an Express Van as the base calibration as they came with the 5.7 through 02 in the US). This gives you 6MT/60E/80E trans control as well.

What I don't know for this is how cruise works with the LS1 P01 and a DBW throttle, you'd have to dig into that.

Knowing you're interesting in deeper vehicle control, frankly that'll prove challenging regardless of PCM/ECM selection. I don't do enough swaps to have deep knowledge on this, mostly factory vehicles. I would pick an entire vehicle and make your engine/trans setup work with it. For example, if you stick with the TBSS platform, buy a wrecked one and grab literally everything (cluster, ECM/TCM, ABS, wiring, etc) and put it all in your T/A. Then your SBC as close to the factory engine as possible.

You may find that going open source and factory PCM/ECMs is cheaper than an aftermarket ECU initially, but it won't have the flexibility to integrate other things like ABS or traction control easily.

Yes, You nailed it!!! Thanks for the responce!!!

You mentioned about grabbing a wrecked vehicle and using all of it's components. Yes, my plans exactly. If I plan it right, I'll pick up some extra usable items like bucket seats and maybe even some rims. Sell what I don't need to help cover the coast of the purchase of the wreck.
