Where to start

Post by Craigthepony »

Howdy peeps. Ive been looking around but i think im just blind. Ive been looking for any info about 16159278 $DA3 1993 camaro ECM's, from tuning, how they work and lots of info about them, not just "download this software and you can see info" and how everything on the 8192 aldl works in detail too.
A couple forums ive found only gives software that tells you all this info and lets you control the ecm (like scan9495) or its all for 94+, but i want the fine details, like down to what messages everything it sending around, how to enable different "modes" into the ecm to control it, how specifically the 93 works before they updated it.

Yes I know this is kinda a long fetched question but so far i cant find any public info that isnt hidden behind a closed sourse project. I want to learn how the 93 works specifically as its the oddball out, the runt of the litter.
Im still very new to all this, so i dont got none of the tools to reverse engineer any of this so hence this question, that way i can get my foot kinda in the door with some info

I think you are going to find, for that era, that is back in the roots of this forum when it was smaller and more Australian based. We have information and threads about the Aussie commodore, but not the Camaro. The later V8 commodore platform from 1999/2000+ was used in American vehicles and since pcmhammer was created we got a lot more American forum members and American information. For what you want, especially on an oddball model the information you seek might not be available with the level of detail you ask. gearhead efi is a similar forum to this, with its roots in the USA PCMs. But the information there is searchable and findable, so if they had it you probably would have found it already. You are probably going to have to spend the time going piece by piece to learn what you need. General information about ALDL (which there are some good early threads on this forum about), and you're going to need the definitions for $DA3 to learn what is in its data stream and what can be tuned but I think its going to be a lot of manual work, and reverse engineering if what you want isn't freely available. People here can help you with that if you have specific questions and are prepared to spend the time reading and learning as you go as well but its not going to be easy, especially for someone who is new too it. It is a great hobby, but it can also take a lot of time, sometimes with results, sometimes without. 1993 is pre OBD2, so while some information carries through, its less standardized than more modern systems, especially the data. The mode functions by number are generally standardized by GM, but the payloads vary depending what you're doing. If your the first to do it you'll often need to find a tool that does what you want and sit there monitoring the data as you use it and then to figure it out. As for figuring out the higher level logic, if its not already available the ways are observe what the ecm does as you use it, observe was similar ecms do or have documented and check if the same applies to yours, read the factory service manuals and see if that covers it, or finally reverse engineer the operating system, but this is very difficult and time consuming, and usually only best done by those who already have some skills in reverse engineering. You can learn, but don't underestimate the learning curve and go in ready for it.
