Unusual oil pressure light operation Mazda 2

Post by Charlescrown »

I know this may be a long shot but theres a lot of smart guys on this forum.
I have a friend who has a 2019 Mazda 2 and when you turn on the start button the oil pressure light comes on then goes out after a few seconds. This seems illogical to me that you don't have to start the engine for the light to go out just have the ignition on. I'm wondering if there is some ECU intervention that will turn the light on if the engine is running and it runs out of oil pressure. It's done it since new and I keep telling him to take it back to Mazda and get confirmation that it's meant to do that but he's reluctant to do so. Any ideas?

Maybe just a light test function?

Are there other lights that come on and then turn off at the same/similar time?

Yea there are lots of lights that come on but they all go out when you start it. I have never seen a car that the light goes out without starting the engine My question is if it is a self test which is really not needed with the normal earthing switch when will it actually come on? The owners handbook is very vague in it's description just saying if the light comes on when driving pull over. Too late then for my thinking.

It is a weird one.

Can you access the oil pressure sensor easily? Unplug it and see what happens then.

Engine Oil Warning Light*1

*1 The light turns on when the ignition is switched on for an operation check, and turns off a few seconds later or when the engine is started. If the light does not turn on or remains turned on, have the vehicle inspected at an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.

The new question is, why do you not see the same from the other warning lights that have the *1 tag. Maybe it has none of them, or there are other faults, or maybe its an optional feature as decided and programmed by mazda in the calibration?

Normal operation.

It's not going to be a simple switch providing earth to light the globe directly. It's a 2019 Mazda.

It will have an oil pressure sensor connected to the PCM (especially considering it will have VCT), and the oil pressure or light status will be transmitted to the cluster over CAN

Thats what I'm starting to think. As to where the switch is I have no idea. I looked around the filter area where to previous model was but nothing so they have moved it just to complicate things. I have downloaded a workshop manual from Mazda and briefly had a look but like the owners handbook it's very vague with no component location pics so maybe I need to do some serious reading.
I have just found this statement on a Mazda site.
