So these newfangled pcms... from what i can gather they're mc68336 based?
I can see they have a knack for flaking out..
And there are many offered for sale repaired.
Do they have common failure modes [lots of models, i can see - e38 e69 etc etc etc] such as cracked traces from Non lead solder? Or burned out fet drivers?
dried out electrolytic?
Just what is it that makes all of them intermittently weak?

In near on 18 years I have never seen a failed E38 or E67 (PPC/MPC56X CPU) apart from incompatible flashes that cause corruption & cause them to play dead as if faulty. Nothing taking the back off & doing a BDM recovery won't fix.

Some E40's (MC68377?) that have done some duty suffer from memory errors most likely due to failing flash memory.

The ones I have heard of are either software failures and are reflashed with BDM, or dry solder joints on the back of the pins. Either of them require pulling the back off the PCM and glueing it back on. Not so easy to do. I've done it for BDM access during pcmhammer development, and when I do it, its like opening a sardine tin and does not go back together. I would be thinking the ones you are seeing are just junkyard pulls with a bit of a wipe down. Or a PC software based recovery. If you can see evidence of the back being opened and glued back on, maybe it's BDM recovery or dry solder joints. To get to the top of the board with most the components, like caps, you need to desolder every pin at the back of the connector, which might technically be possible with a heat gun and skilled hands but it sure would not be easy.

Here is a p05 ive been trying to BDM to give an idea whats in there. You've gotta heat gun the black strip around the edge, prise it back to get here. And then desolder all of those rows of pins at the back of the connectors or on the other side plus the large ground pads to free the PCB to get to the PCB top side if that is your aim.

In case this is helpful, this image attempts to make the P05 BDM connections (hopefully) a little easier to follow.
