If you look at one of the diagnostic charts, it mentions coolant sensor resistance. The one the ECM uses, not the switch for the dash.
These are known to be troublesome. Check.
Go through all those steps.

Making some positive progress now.
Going to make up a smaller diameter hole gasket and see how that works.
It’s is enjoying idling around the 1000rpm mark. Can rev it and it not hunt. Rad fan kicks in and it doesn’t really budge in rpm now.
Bloody air con belt is now slipping and making a hideous noise. I’ve tightened it twice already. Surely they shouldn’t stretch that much. A/c pump bearing is a little noisy. Think I may have to look at doing it. Wondering if it’s not helping with the added load when the clutch kicks in.

On the matter of the slipping A/C belt, don't over tighten it. It is a short, thick belt. It should have plenty of grip. I use the thumb deflection method to check. Try grab the belt between thumb and forefinger and you should be able to push it up and down 5-6mm. Look for shiny marks on the pulley from slip, clean up the belt with medium grit paper, this will help it grip. Maybe clean the pulley with white spirit etc.
If the compressor bearing is noisy, it's are sure sign it's overtightened

I would think the belt is the last problem on the list. Take it off and concentrate and the idle problem.

Fairly well actually. Only issue I had was the min bpw was too much for the 42LB injectors I was running but once I halved that it ran great off the bat. Even the stock timing map was very close to what the engine wanted having high comp pistons.
One thing to remember is this sized cam per cylinder displacement is about that of the 5L group A so its very compatible situation. I still reckon the tune is not right, a lot of the factory early tunes were not that good. The stock VP auto tunes, BAAM in particular had hunting and tip in stalling issues from factory, 12P being based on a
much later revision had it sorted by then and in my case also fixed the hunt and tip in stall the $5D tunes had. I wouldn't be surprised if the group A tunes had similar issues as the early VN-VP ones had.

He could spend a thousand on stuff and he would barely see where it went.
My argument was only boosted when you said yours ran pretty well with stock tune

It doesn't matter how many cylinders is has, you need to look at per cylinder volume vs the cam profile and that way you can compare any engine tune wise and its requirements. In fact many would make the fallacy of smaller engine- same cam = worse quality idle/low end performance. So if my engine can run good so can this, just tune it.
Either way my argument stands that there must be something really wrong with the tune if it can't even idle on a tiny cam like that. It would probably run better on a stock 12P BLCF tune. In fact I have tuned a worked stoker v8 on 12P and I did nothing for idle tuning, it just idled off the bat. Just changed the injector related data to suit it's non stock injectors, dialed in the VE and spark table and called it done.
Either way my argument stands that there must be something really wrong with the tune if it can't even idle on a tiny cam like that. It would probably run better on a stock 12P BLCF tune. Are you not seeing that I agree with the cylinder volume thing? That's why I gave credence to the comparison with your camshaft. Otherwise I would have said you can't compare them. Your engine is smaller only because there are LESS CYLINDERS. Look at the previous post.
