Yeah it’s strange all I can think of is maybe something is up with the cord or the actual comms port.

its possible. driver error might be because it cant ID the chip. This is the driver but unless you know that laptop isnt pulling drivers automatically for some reason it probably wont help. https://ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp-drivers/

Given that my memory is stuffed these days I might be recalling it wrong, but I have a feeling I had this before on 11 (pretty much skipped 10 in personal use but should be the same) where windows would immediately replace a vendor's driver I install with what it thought was a newer version from windows update/MS's driver database.

I can't recall how I fixed it, but I think I had to force it to not "update" and use the MS driver and use the actual driver I wanted, I don't know if this was for the USB adapter or the USB prom programmer, probably the latter, but sounds exactly like something I had to deal with last year or so when using this win 11 laptop I'm on right now.
I'm the director of VSH (Vlad's Spec Holden), because HSV were doing it ass about.

The pcmhacking gear uses genuine ftdi chips specifically so that the default drivers work out of the box. The gq-4x4 might be what your thinking of. It uses an mcu devkit ID which is also usedby usb bdm nt so that can trip each other up, but its not relevent to the ecm comms boards.
