Not sure if the other guys know, but what needs to be done to short the resonator crystal?

just joint the two pins of it.
hopefully its off the PCB a bit and you can probably get some tie wire around the bottom of it to link to two ?

so no one has had any success ? i've got one on its way
anyway my test bench is fully working just plug in a VT VX and program with a Tech2

Well went to attempt, then thought I broke the cluster since could no longer communicate over comms! So still am to crack open the cluster again to try out. Although I dont think thatll be enough, could just be the limitation of the programmers were using.
Remember reading in the VS programming thread that noone could read/write on board. Although there is one bloke who can.. but is using the top of the line programmer at $500+... will see if I cant find that post and what it was.
Your test bench is looking alright! Least its plug and play. Iv directly soldered onto the pins due to a lack of any floppy cables lying around.
What was the go with programming the nec chip, does it end up writing over other data such as the speedo/tacho or was that just because of connection errors or limited amount of times to manually write info back?
Tech2 has an option to "reset to factory" settings somewhere in there from memory so worse comes to worse just click that and let it work its magic. Think it does a complete eeprom rewrite

Galep-4 is the programmer. At $400 usd.. Id expect it to read/write everything on board. Has a bigger brother too, the Galep-5D which can cost up to $2K depending on the options

the NEC programmer does work as long as you do what it was to do, correct the ODO, lifting the pins require clean soldered connections and then back to the MCU
no multiple reads or write as it will corrupt the software, but it also has the ability to flash the eeprom
the original is saved on the correction,you can use to restore it
there is no factory reset on the tech2, these MCU are custom produced and preloaded with the software version and then customized
