You do not need the CEL hooked up, can 100% assure you that it is not needed with 8192 baud data. The 160baud interface was using the CEL wire to bit bang data.

It may depend on the diagnostic interface but the minimum pins required on the diagnostic connector are 4/5 as ground and 9 as ALDL. You may also need +12V on pin 16.

Data on the ECU is pin A8 (colour is red/black).

Can try with the flashtool..
Vehicle = VR on Bench
Interface = USB ALDL
ECM Com Port = Whatever windows has assigned

This sets up echo for the interface and also does not go looking for a BCM. It works with a ECU on its own just like you have. Plug the standard HSV memcal in, open the flashtool, setup as per above, go to tools and then listen to chatter. Press 'Listen to chatter' and then switch the key on within a second or so. You should see data from the ECU that would normally go to the BCM for VATS.

Ok I don't have ground at pin 4, I don't even have pin 4. Could that be my problem?

Beat me to a reply :) Will still add the info.

Pins 4 and 5 can be ground, some interfaces allow for both others use just 5 as pin 4 is not wired in many models - pin 4 is chassis ground and pin 5 is signal ground when pin 4 is wired.

Can you confirm the ECU is either a 16183082 or 16206305? This is the hardware type.

Thats an interesting sticker! A 16176424 is a VR auto PCM part number, but that is the smaller ECM case which wont fit an auto PCM board, it has ECM plugs and mentions BFPM manual HSV.

Id be opening up the case to see what is inside, hopefully its a VR manual and not an '808!

My first thoughts were that sticker was fake, but some adjustments to the photo and I think its promising that it might be the '082 were hoping for.

So pin 6 isn't necessary then?
