heh heh yeah it was on the engine bay side where the power should be sent "from"

Did you check the earth you were clipped onto with the multimeter? Easiest is to clip the earth lead on then touch the +ve probe to the +ve battery terminal and check you get a reading. Many a time I've clipped to some clean piece of metal but it's not provided a good connection.
You could test the wires coming to the relay with the meter, just pull the relay and stick the +ve probe into the terminals. Check that you have power going to the relay for it to switch and then you can check the trigger when you turn the key. That will rule out or identify two possibilities.

I will check that method tonight. I must admit I have a hunch, the neutral inhibitor on the Side of the gearbox (4L60E) had to be replaced and the plug may not be in all the way. This may explain the symptoms.
What wires should I cross to override it? Tailshaft is removed!

Hmm will follow the wires back then.

@Holden 202 the website on your profile oldholdens.com no longer exists

Hey also by the way I'd like to say I really appreciate all the help thats been offered on here. The JustCommodores forum has a few people offering dumb suggestions (except for a bloke called Nutcracker who is a freaking champion and a wealth of knowledge).

Showing my appreciation, Thank you

That's why I very rarely post on JC forums.

Just have to figure out where the problem is, if the relay is clicking, then it's unlikely to be PCM related. As you've swapped the relay that should rule out a faulty relay so it's just down to power feed to the relay and the wiring to the starter.

oh I would have been interested to see the website.

Haven't had a chance to go back to work on the car but in planning the engine bay and may have to swing the alternator up as it fowls on the engine bay. Trouble is the MAF sensor is there. Is there a MAFless tune available anywhere?

There is only one I know of on a Holden 5Lt sequential V8 but he is in Vic and didn't know how widely done this type of tune is done.
I did hear the early VN V8's were MAFless too

VS series 3 and VT series 1 V8's were the only ones that were MAF. All the earlier 304's were MAP based but they also used different ECMs to the PCM that is found in VS3 and VT1 so not a simple matter of changing to an earlier tune. Someone else might know of a tune that will fit.

yeah i looked at putting a 304 into a EH and had similiar issues and the plan was to get i think, HK-T-G ?? brackets as they seemed to be high on the head and like the only option that would fit, but i never got that far and the car is now sold.

can you not just re-route the inlet piping around the alternator ?
