They go by many names, P01, P10, P12, P59, E38, VPW, '0411 etc.

Hello, I am trying to connect to my 02 sierra via PCM hammer with a usb link 2 and I get the following message in the debug log.

Try updating its firmware and device driver.

I just updated to the latest driver and firmware and am still receiving the same message

It just says failed to set protocol. I think your interface does not support VPW.

The only reason a J2534 scantool cannot connect to a protocol is if its not supported.

Its on my todo list to read out all supported protocols from the J2534 device to indicate whats supported.

I just checked Nexiq's website, the usb link 2 supports j1850 but not j1850 vpw, antus was right on.
