were you trying to read a chip that has been removed from the board befor. i have found that the clip will some times not get proper connection from a chip that i have replaced, i all ways put it down to my poor soldering skills,................. factory soldered chips, my clip works every time.
i had a close up of my 3M clip and it looks identical to yours.

I checked out that Galep-4, No kidding.. 400usd. Thats some high end equipment Id say. Looking at the device list, I think it will do anything you ever come across!
Checked out some of their other programmers for shits and giggles.. and theres some up for over a $1000. Id expect it to do absolutely everything for that, even gold plated or something.
